en oscillation

In Oscillation is an interactive and immersive installation combining sculptural elements to electronic circuits, which establishes parallels between the mycorrhizal fungi network under the forest floor and our contemporary communication systems. The title references both the movement of the mycelium (forming the mycorrhizae) expanding in the soil to connect with plant roots, and the succession of currents going through an electrical circuit.

Visitors are invited to come in contact with and become part of the network by pressing the sensors to turn on the fungi lighting circuits, which then activate sound circuits containing light sensitive sensors. The project involved picking, molding and then casting different kinds of mushrooms in transparent colored resin, and inserting LED lights inside. Based on Forrest Mims’ “Engineer’s Mini-Notebook” from the 80s, non-programmable electronic circuits are used in the installation, in order to mimic the biochemical signals transmitted by the mycorrhiza network.

In Oscillation was created over a period of two years and involved many collaborations with other institutions and individuals during artist residencies at the Caetani Cultural Centre (BC), Avatar (Québec), the Vermont Studio Center (US) and Oboro (Montreal), and received the financial support from Canada Council of the Arts. It was exhibited in 2019 at the McCarthy Art Gallery, in Vermont (US), and in 2023 for the Mois Multi (Quebec).
